Here’s some information for your diaries on the Dia de los Muertos exhibition and auction; raising funds for the charity from the sale of artwork made by a group of invited artists, and based on the Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ festival.
As you can see from the list of artists involved, mine will probably be a little more affordable than the rest.
Exhibition dates - 27th October to the 1st November 11.00 a.m to 5.00 p.m at The Proud Gallery, Camden
Artwork available to buy via the Mencap website, from the exhibition or by auction at Bonhams, Knightsbridge on 11th November
Other artists exhibiting include - Craigie Aitchison, Tracey Emin, Gillian Ayres OBE, Martin Parr, David Birkin, Matthew Williamson, John Keane, Hilary Simon, Roberto Gonzalez Fernandez (RGF + DDT), Carlos Diez Bustos, David Trullo and Stephen Wright
Should be a wide range of interpretations on the theme, so worth a look even if you can’t afford to buy…
More info nearer the time on the Mencap website

Here’s a couple of images from new, larger, map-based pieces that I’m working on. I’m still exploring the relationship between a sensing body and the wider environment of which it is a part, the experience of moving through such an environment, and how to document/share that experience or at least point to it in some way.

These latest larger pieces, although still very much in development, seem to begin to hint at something more too… something beyond the usual fragments of experience that I explore and express in my work, towards a larger, more cohesive picture of that experience - something spiritual and beyond human scale.

I also went to an exhibition at the Winchester Discovery Centre this week, an installation by artist Andrew Carnie using projection onto hanging gauze or muslin, with the imagery projected alternately from both sides, through layers of the hanging fabric. Although very different in approach, there’s something about these two that links them, the focus on bodily and creative experience, and the representation of the figure as if floating in space, surrounded, held and lifted.

I went and saw my work in the Evolver Prize exhibition in Dorchester on Friday. It still moves me to see my work on show, especially when it’s been away from ‘home’ for a while, and I’ve got that distance back so I can see it again with fresh eyes. When I saw it I felt a boost, a reassurance that what I’m trying to instill in my work, a soulfulness, a balance, and a sensitivity to materials, is all in there, that I am being true to the experience of being a sensing, connected part of the world in which I find myself.
And then we went to the beach and sat on the pebbles, watching the rain clouds coming in over the sea.

I have started to explore new ways of fusing my wearable work and the stitched/collaged paper and textile pieces that I have been making recently.
As I’ve been asked to make work for Mencap’s Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibition and charity auction, I am thinking about creating a wearable piece that uses elements inspired by devotional art, together with photography and applied found objects to celebrate the lives of people I’ve known that have died.
As the work develops (The exhibition will be at the Proud Gallery in Camden in the Autumn) I’ll add some images here, but in the meantime, here’s some smaller textile pieces that I’m working on…

If you get chance, have a look at the Small Pictures Open Exhibition at Salisbury Arts Centre…2nd October to 1st November… it includes a couple of my own collaged/assembled works, one made up on Oare Hill, Wilts. onto a photographic print and map of the hill, and the other put together as part of my recent ‘unpicking’ of home, as a subject for making.
