Fantastic one woman show featuring Liz Rothschild on the work and life of writer, scientist and environmental campaigner Rachel Carson… see their website for tour dates and more information….
Rachel Carson wrote “Silent Spring” in 1962 overcoming the opposition of government, industry and her own failing personal health in order to alert the world to the careless use of chemicals in our environment. This theatre piece enables a contemporary audience to appreciate the courage of Rachel Carson once again.

“It says Doctors”
A brilliant, flowing, playful morning… we introduced construction materials to the mark-making materials from previous sessions and the children really ran with it - gluing, arranging, filling and posting objects, climbing in and out of boxes and hiding with their precious jewels (glass beads and pebbles).
(rolling toys and jewels to a boy in the box)
Some children chose to work (play) together, others on their own using the scrap materials to ‘write’ favourite words and share ideas, or to wrap and connect with tape and tubes, exploring the spaces inside and the tactile quality of the materials.

Developing sketchbook ideas for small figures made from collected materials… shown in series?…links to places?… leading to actions/images/video of the figures in those different environments, linking person and place by the made object and the experience of making.

A few images from a PAWS (West Wilts Council funded) project I ran at The Mead Primary this week - a lovely group of children - enthusiastic and creative, using a wide range of recycled materials to make woodland wildlife….

This week at Pitton Pre-School, I provided the children with large scale paper and acrylic paints… again, as always with 5×5x5, it was up to the children what they chose to do with the materials, but we spent a few minutes talking about what we had seen in the artwork at the ‘Colour Rush’ exhibition, the children’s interests in tracks and trails found in the abstract artworks, and the fabric and spaces of the building itself (e.g. the big old doors and locks of the reduntant church building).
The responses were varied, with a lot of sensory investigation of the paint, with hands and brushes, mark-making with sticks and brush handles, and a general absorption in the qualities of and possibilities provided by the materials.

A group of 6 to 7 children have been identified with a strong direction in their work/play, and its these children that we will be concentrating on documenting through photos, notes and video over the coming sessions - tracking their learning, and providing materials and opportunities appropriate to their individual interests and approach.

Some images from this Tuesday’s visit to the colour rush exhibition, which gave the group of 3 to 4 year old children a chance to explore the arts centre and the work on show, share their thoughts and ideas and influence what steps the work will take next….click on the images for more information.

5×5x5=creativity is an action research project, linking artist, early years educational settings and cultural centres (arts centres, theatres, outdoor education orgs etc) with the aim of supporting young children’s learning through their own creativity, interests and ideas.
This is the third year that I have been working with Pitton Pre-School, near Salisbury, and Salisbury Arts Centre, and this years research has just begun … more information to follow as things develop.
